A Call for Responsibility After the Minnesota Shooting

The shooting in Minnesota is a tragic reminder of the dangers facing our communities and those who serve them. I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Renee Nicole Good, and my thoughts are with all those affected.

Violence against law enforcement is unacceptable and must be condemned without hesitation. Officers are public servants who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others, and they should never be treated as political targets or symbols.

At the same time, we must be honest about the broader climate surrounding these incidents. For years, some politicians on the left have used rhetoric that demonizes law enforcement and normalizes hostility toward police. Words matter. When leaders portray officers as enemies rather than professionals doing a difficult job, it contributes to an environment that increases risk.

This does not mean avoiding discussion about political and policy disagreements. Those conversations can and should happen responsibly, without dehumanization or reckless language that puts lives at risk.

As a candidate for U.S. House in North Carolina’s 12th District, I believe leadership requires restraint and responsibility, especially in moments like this. We should lower the temperature, reject divisive narratives, and reaffirm that violence—against anyone, including law enforcement—has no place in our country.

My condolences remain with the family of Renee Nicole Good, and my support is with the officers and communities impacted by this tragedy.
